The above are not the vital statistics of Kim Kardashian. They are not the latest 4D lotto numbers. They are the minutes played in each quarter in this game. But first things first.
A trip to SIA to face Exiles is never easy, although they are one of the weaker teams in the league. A recent excursion there went woefully bad and we lost 1:3. But despite a few absences we had a strong squad available, including two new recruits: Bernd Schiele and Alex Bursak. They both blended in very well and are really good signings!
Back to the numbers: the first quarter lasted the regular 20 minutes, and we should have been 3 or 4 up. We totally dominated the game, the ball and the opponent. We had plenty of chances and remained patient, without being able to take the lead.
The next quarter then lasted all of 11 minutes: sadly, an Exiles player collapsed and the ambulance had to be called. He did make a miraculous recovery in the ambulance and ultimately walked back to the pitch. We wish the fellow well! Because of the long interruption waiting for the ambulance, the teams decided to take the half-time break now and to play 2 x 25 minutes in the second half. So no goals in the first “half”.
The pattern of the game remained unchanged. Team in red in total control, but more often than not, the last ball was not good enough. It took a Chris Ang slalom through the Exiles defence to break the deadlock. He calmly finished his mazy run with a shot into the far corner. And the floodgates opened immediately! Not that we scored a lot more, but the rain became very heavy. Luckily, Piotr than doubled our lead to put this to bed. I can’t recall that Joe in goal had anything to do. He could have stayed home, probably.
The last quarter then only lasted 11 minutes because the pitch had become waterlogged and the referee decided that 66 minutes was enough. 2:0, nothing to write home about, but another solid performance in difficult circumstances.
We probably had 80% of the ball, more than 25 shots on target and at least a dozen corner kicks, such was the dominance. But we were not able to convert that into more goals.
Difficult to select a MoM. It could have gone to a number of candidates, but to me Chris Ang just got it, not least because he was able to break the deadlock. He was omni-present and distributed the ball well. Other contenders were Winnie for his amazing work-rate, or Dan for bossing the midfield.
Special mention to Felix, who almost had a sensational cameo appearance. He was at the right time at the right place to connect with Winnie’s cross, but he somehow missed it. Perhaps it was the water on the pitch.
Next up: SCC at UWC. A six-pointer!
