The start into the 2026/2027 season was a tough encounter with Hibs. The team won the Cup last year and were ahead of us in the table. With the declared goal of a top three finish, it is imperative that we are able to beat teams like the Hibs.

Coach Alp announced it at the AGM: the focus will be on discipline, fitness and teamwork. Discipline meant that all 18 players were at GESS at 10.30 am (or at least almost). After a good warm-up the coach prepped the team and we went into the game with confidence. That was shattered after 60 seconds when a lapse in concentration let to a Hibs attach which was clinically converted. But heads did not dop, and we quickly grew into the gam, but had nothing to show until the water break.

Within a minute after the water break we were even: Urs, with his first touch of the ball headed a clearance from the goalkeeper into the path of Piotr, who with his first touch of the ball coolly converted. Game on! Both teams had chances, but nothing to count for until half time.

Half time talk was that we are in the ascendancy and that the game is ours to take. Well, the script was a bit different: it took Hibs only two minutes to regain the lead after a bit of confusion in our backline. But again, heads did not drop, we reacted superbly, and Micha brought us back on level terms with a well-taken penalty. Then, barely 12 hours after being voted MVP for the last season, Joe Giani stepped up and just wanted to let everyone know that it was the right decision. First, he saved a shot from point-blank range with a save I have not seen in very, very long time. Not on the pitch, not on TV. It was out of this world. Then, at the other end of the pitch, Micha played Piotr in for his second goal and our first lead. 3:2 with eight minutes to go. We defended well and even had chances on the break. But then Hibs were awarded free kick 20 meters out in stoppage time. The wall did its job, but the referee felt that a hand was in play: penalty! And here is when Joe reminded us yet again who is the boss. He saved the penalty with a one handed save, and the referee blew the whistle shortly after.

A fantastic win against a strong Hibs team. Probably one of our best games in recent history. We defended well, Uwe, Chris, David and Michael were outstanding. Dan bossed the midfield and upfront Piotr, aka Boniek found his scoring boots. Total team performance and a very good start into the new season.
