The stage was set for an epic re-match between GASIII and the league leading Kamikazee MMXV Written by Dinh - who we wish all the best in his next step!

Kamikazee won the first game, but GASIII was looking to draw first blood, close out the year on a high note, and move up to the top of the league table. Rain had been pouring throughout the early afternoon at the pitch, cooling temperatures and keeping the artificial turf slick. Conditions were ideal, and the larger field was supposed to be a comparative advantage for the faster, stronger, and better looking GASIII Team.
GASIII fielded a strong side with momentum, coming off a hard-fought win against a pugnacious Heist side. Markus B. was in form at the top, balancing both speed and precision as a menacing forward. The core midfield trio of Flo P., Moritz B, and Dinh L. represented a strong backbone for the team, with Steffen H. and Markus A. flanking them with power and more speed on the wings. GASIII twin towers anchored the formidable central defense. Coming into the match, GASIII were the underdogs on paper, but the clear favorites on the field. And the opposing side knew it.
At kick-off, GASIII pressed the Kamikazee backline hard, giving them some trouble to build from the back. Kamikazee executed their off-side trap effectively, with a little help from the referee who responded to every cat call and argument from the Kamikazee side – both on and off the field. It was becoming clear the referee was serving as Kamikazee’s 12th player as the intensity and aggression on the field continued, and all the calls were going in Kamikazee’s favor. Both teams pressed hard and created changes, but neither could convert. Steffen H. and Markus A were dangerous on both wings, running past the Kamikazee players, and creating numerous chances. However, the half ended scoreless - a score that reflected the tempo and effort on the field by both sides.
With the second-half underway, GASIII started slow and found themselves under pressure in the back. With a terrible call from the ref, responding to a shrieking cry by a Kamikazee forward, a penalty was given. Clearly up to the task, Christian Frank stood larger than life in the goal and told the ref and the Kamikazee penalty kicker to “kindly leave his sight” in German. As the Kamikazee penalty taker approached the ball, there was a conspicuous shiver in his knees and a trace of pee running down his leg (according to Fabian K. who inspected closely). Christian F. was in his head, and Kamikazee’s weak effort was blocked.
While GASIII pushed with some strong runs by Christian S. at the top to create chances, Kamikazee ultimately scored first following a questionable no-call off-sides by the Ref (aka Kamikazee’s 12th man). Kamikazee’s through-ball caught the GASIII backline, and the speed of the Kamikazee forward took advantage of the space to run past the GASIII defenders and slot the ball into the back of the net to take the lead 1-0. Undeterred, GASIII responded with a powerful header by Fabian K. from a corner to level the score 1-1. The momentum of the match switched back-and-forth between the two tightly contested teams, and with 20 min. left in the half Kamikazee scored again with a well-placed run from the left and tap in from the streaking center forward. The Kamikazee coach yelped in celebration, and taunted the GASIII supporters with, “That’s football” chant!
This was not how the game or the year was supposed to end. GASIII kept its composure and dug deep to respond. Following a foul at the top of the 18 box, Desmond Ang slammed home a free-kick to level the score once again in the waning minutes of the game. And, that’s how it ended – a hard-fought 2-2 tie with the league leaders to close out the GASIII 2022 season.
There were a lot of positives for GASIII, in particular the GASIII never-quit spirit we’ve seen through 2022. In addition, the GASIII supporters played a critical role on the sidelines, taunting the Kamikazee coach, players, and ref, and giving the team a much needed morale boost to help balance the tide throughout the match.
For me, it was a decent result to end my GAS and GASIII playing career. A huge thank you to the team for welcoming me and my family into the squad and making the experience over the last two years one of the true highlights of my short time in Singapore. Though I’ll be moving from Singapore, I hope to keep the friendships and connections with GAS with me wherever I go! Danke! And, please let me know if you find yourself in my neck of the woods!
