Perfect points for Team 1

Talk of the town was the sensational last minute transfer of defensive star Manni into team GSOS1. While the management remained tightly lipped about the sources that bankrolled the move (there were rumours about Kyrgyz and South African money being involved), Manni himself, being down to earth as always, commented: “The transfer window was open and this was too good an opportunity to miss”. Thus, expectations were sky high in the GSOS1 camp as they went into the first match against hosts BFA. The line-up was naturally defensive with Manni at the back, Flo in the center just in front of him, and Urs and Jos on the wings, playing a “pincer” 1–1-2 on the attack and a “block the Suez canal” 1-3-0 horizontal defense against the ball. The match plan was patiently and perfectly executed, thanks to good movement and flawless passing from all players, never allowing for any gaps in defense, whilst creating space in attack. However, upfront we weren’t as clinical as in defense with Jos, Urs and Flo all being denied by the post of missing the goal by a whisker. After 12 minutes the deadlock was broken as Jos scored from about 10 yards out into the top right corner. 1-0 it was, allowing us to tighten the defensive game further and waiting for counter attacks. While BFA never looked like scoring Jos got his second one in the 18th minute, after a brilliant interception by Urs, to put the game to rest. A last minute interception by Flo in midfield offered another scoring opportunity to Urs, but the ball touched the outer left post. 2-0 it was at the end.
Much of the same in game 2. Solid defending, orchestrated by new signing Manni, and good control of the ball, perhaps with a little bit less drive towards the opponent’s goal with less clear cut scoring opportunities. On those rare occasions we had a clean shot on goal the post (2x) or their goalie was at BFA’s rescue. In after 10 minutes BFA started to press us more than in game 1, but GSOS never lost control of the game, making no mistakes in the build up. In minute 15 Flo had a good attempt on goal which wasn’t cleared well, allowing Urs to skillfully get control of the ball to make it 1-0, at last ! BFA responded with furious attacks but Manni again and again showed his class ... until we lost focus just once, for this fraction of a second, allowing for a sharp pass from the left into the center where BFA’s tireless #7 got his foot at the ball: 1-1 it was with two minutes on the clock. BFA now smelled blood and wanted the winner, allowing for space on the counter which Jos and Urs ruthlessly exploited with a nice one-two with 90 seconds to go. Two more subsequent attempts from BFA were blocked by Flo and Manni to keep the final score at 2-1 and six well deserved points in the bag for GSOS1. Overall an rock-solid performance by the team and a great debut for Manni, while Jos and Urs both got on the scoresheet twice.
